Goodbye Design

No more design this month. The primary reason was that it was beginning to feel like a chore, something that didn’t motivate me at all to try to do my best.

So from now until the end of the month, I’ll post snippets of my Slabazar story, or other things I happen to write.

Sigue la historia de Slabazar el magnifico:

Cuando despertaba, Slabazar era solo Felix, el niño de la esquina. Pero Slabazar nunca despertaba, aun cuando sus ojos se abrían, cuando se levantaba de su pequeña cama, listo para enfrentar un nuevo dia. Su mente seguía en sueños, y era una entidad completamente diferente de su pequeño y frágil cuerpo. Su mente era fuerte, robusta, mientras que su débil cuerpucho lo hacia parecer mas pequeño de lo que realmente era.

La magia de Slabazar el magnifico se debilitaba mientras su cuerpo deambulaba por entre la multitud de cuerpos animados por el dia. Sus padres, sus maestros, y hasta sus compañeros de clase, todos ellos decía poder pensar, decían poder soñar, pero en realidad su mente solo abarcaba un momento, un instante, de nuestro universo. Sus preocupaciones no eran mas que las mas pequeñas de las manchas en la historia del universo.

Slabazar soñaba, el soñaba de la tierra, de los planetas, del universo en si. Soñaba las explosiones de las supernovas, los gases toxicos de planetas sin vida, y las coliciones interplanetarias en los oscuros recodos del universo. El soñaba del principio y del final, cuando la ultima canción seria cantada, la ultima palabra hablada, y la ultima estrella se extinguiera, dejando al universo en una oscuridad y silencio semejante a un teatro donde esta apunto de iniciar una función.

About Design

You know, it is great that I am doing design this month because I realize that graphic design is really not for me.

Honestly, I think I am a creative person, but for some reason when it comes to art like drawing/painting/etc, I always get stuck. I love colors and mixing them up to tell a story, but design per se is just not what I can do.

I don’t know, should I stop this month’s project? It seems counterproductive to do it all of a sudden… I’ll meditate on this.

Meanwhile, I would like to share a story that I had the idea of doing after doing this palette:

Slabazar el magnífico soñaba entre las cuatro paredes de su habitación. Slabazar no dormía, no se le puede llamar dormir a su frágil respirar, a sus parpados cerrados como grandes cortinas que esconden secretos y maravillas, a sus sueños que eran tan grandes como el mundo. Sus sueños eran tan grandes que no podían ser contenidos en su cabeza, ni en las cuatro paredes de su cuarto, ni en su modesta casa. Eran tan grandes que se escapaban por entre las rendijas de la puerta, se escapaban cuales rayos de luz por las oscuras ranuras de la madera, e impregnaban el césped del jardín. El mundo entero se impregnaba con sus sueños. Las risas se volvían un poco mas alegres, las triztesas se levantaban ligeramente, y la gente sentía en su corazón un toque inesperado de felicidad.

Pero Slabazar, el solo soñaba. Soñaba sueños de libertad, de alegrías, de aventuras desenfrenadas por los cuatro confines del mundo. Slabazar soñaba con praderas, con peñazcos inalcanzables, con magia, y amistad. Su deseo de soñar y de vivir era tan grande que escapaba de sus sueños y se convertía en el sueño del mundo, de todas las personas. Mientras el soñaba, todos soñaban con el, aun si no se daban cuenta.

I’ve been reading up on some color theory and design for beginners and have decided to create yet another color scheme. Yes, it appears the never ending quest for color schemes is, not surprisingly, never ending.

I like this better. It isn’t as shrill as the other one. I think that, if I can do it well, it will look good!

Based on yesterday’s Chili colors (which I really liked), I made a palette of the colors I would like to include. The widths reflect the amount of that color I want to have in the site.

As you can see, the cream would be the most prominent. The other colors would be primarily for highlighting and for the header. The dark gray would be perfect for the font. I think that this looks good… By tomorrow, I’ll decide definitely. Yay!

Today I made some chilies. They are all of unnatural colors, and you can bet that they’re going to give you Montezuma’s revenge. How naughty of them. They were very…. Naughty.

Still trying to get what I want in terms of colors! I think that I am getting closer. Particularly because it looks like yesterday’s palette, but feels more ‘right’.

Also, I think that soon I will be able to scan some new drawings I made. Since I can’t draw freehand (seriously, I suck. Just look at this), I am delighted to have found that method of drawing from other drawings and then scanning them. I can find cool source pictures and make them my own, and then choose cool colors for them.
So I had another idea for the header, which involves a lot of images made this way into vectors. Random stuff is cool, just as long as it has color harmony, I think. I do remember one site that had a polar bear in the header… it was really random, but I liked the effect.

This week I decided to, instead of doing vectors, I would try out different palettes for my website.
I am leaning towards a light colored one… maybe like this one:

One of the biggest things I want to do is have some dull colors for the background (the bone and cream colors are what I had in mind), dark gray fonts, and very bold, bright colors like the orange and the pink. I love that shade of pink, but I am deciding what I should combine it with. Maybe with orange and blue, or maybe with just plain dark, very dark grey….

By the end of this week (Saturday), I’ll make a decision for sure!
